We do not know who you are

There are no accounts on this site, no sign-in, and nothing to fill in. We set no cookies and load nothing from anybody else’s server — no third-party fonts, no embeds, no advertising and no tracking network. The one typeface here is served from this site for exactly that reason.

We count page views

One thing here does watch readers, and it is worth being exact about rather than quiet about: this site counts page views, using Vercel Web Analytics. The script comes from this domain and reports back to it, and the counts go to Vercel — the company that already hosts the site and serves every page you load. It is a measurement added, not another company let in.

A view records the page, the time, the site you arrived from, your browser and operating system, whether you are on a phone or a computer, and roughly where you are — as far as the city. It sets no cookie and stores nothing on your device.

So that one person reading three pages counts as one reader rather than three, a visit is identified by a hash of the request. That hash lasts a single day and is then reset, so it cannot join what you read today to what you read tomorrow, and the same hash does not exist on any other website. What comes back to us is counts and lists of pages. There is no screen anywhere that shows an individual reader, because there is nothing stored that could fill one in.

What still gets recorded

The company that hosts this site keeps ordinary server logs — the page requested, roughly when, and the network address it came from — for a short period, as every web host does. We do not build profiles from them, join them to anything, or share them.

The status data itself is anonymous in both directions: our measurement service is asked for a line, not for a person, and it has no idea who is reading. The response is identical for everybody looking at a given line at a given moment.

The app

The iPhone app, when it ships, follows the same rule. There is no account and no server that knows about you; a subscription is handled entirely by Apple, and we never see who bought one — only that Apple says a device is entitled.

If this changes

Adding anything further that watches readers — an email list, error reporting that carries personal data, or a counter that does more than count — means changing this page at the same time. If you are reading it, it is current.
